Akron (92.3 The Fan) – Could Saturday’s Family Day scrimmage in Akron be a sign of things to come?

With the Cleveland Browns considering sites outside of their complex in Berea for training camp next year, the University of Akron has thrown their hat into the ring.

And the Browns are open to the idea of moving camp to Summit County.

“There’s a shot,” team president Alec Scheiner told 92.3 The Fan Saturday. “We’re keeping all of our options open. We’ll know in a couple weeks who would like to host our training camp. We’ve talked to the city of Berea and we’re in no way saying that we won’t go back there. And it’ll be a decision made between myself, Jimmy [Haslam], [Mike] Pettine and Ray [Farmer].”

A crowd of 20,673 was on hand for Saturday’s scrimmage, which had to be moved up with severe weather in the forecast, at InfoCison Stadium.

In addition to a state of the art stadium, which opened in 2009, Akron boasts a full 100-yard indoor football training facility – something that not even their complex in Berea has.

Scheiner said many factors will play into the decision.

“What we really do is figure out what’s the best place for the football team,” Scheiner said. “And we look at things like the field quality, the weight rooms, the stuff that people think is kind of boring. If it works for the football team then we look at, ‘hey what does it do for our business?'”

The Browns have drawn over 19,000 fans in 6 practices held in Berea to date and have yet to draw less than 3,000 fans for a practice.

“I feel like we have a lot of momentum now,” Scheiner said. “We have to capitalize on it. We have to win games. We understand that. That’s the No. 1 thing we have to do. If we do that, if we win games, all of this momentum we have now will catch fire.”
